Senate Works Overnight as Voting Marathon Continues on Trump’s Big, Beautiful Bill Senate voting session

Date: July 1, 2025

The U.S. Senate worked through the night into early morning hours in a rare marathon voting session as lawmakers struggled to advance President Trump’s flagship spending bill. Dubbed the “big, beautiful bill,” the legislation promises sweeping tax cuts for corporations and individuals, alongside substantial reductions in funding for healthcare, food assistance, and education programs.

Supporters of the bill argue that the tax cuts will spur economic growth, attract investment, and create new jobs. “We are delivering historic relief to hardworking Americans and businesses,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said during a 2 a.m. floor speech. “This bill will unleash prosperity like never before.”

However, critics warn that the spending cuts could devastate low-income communities and deepen inequality. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called the legislation “a reckless giveaway to the wealthy that punishes everyday families.”

The overnight session involved a series of amendment votes, with exhausted senators taking turns delivering speeches and negotiating behind closed doors. Some lawmakers were seen resting on cots in the hallway between votes.

The final vote on the bill is expected later today, with both parties still working to secure enough support for passage.
