Gaza City: I only recently witnessed what it’s like for the crowds waiting desperately for aid in Gaza.
I don’t see them in Deir el-Balah, but when we traveled north to Gaza City to visit my family, what I saw on the coastal al-Rashid Street made my heart deeply uneasy. Dozens of starving men, women, and even children were gathering—waiting, chasing, and crying—for trucks that might carry food.
It shook me: if a ceasefire happens, will it truly address this aid crisis? Or will this suffering continue in silence?
Across Gaza, scenes like this are tragically common. People risk death from stampedes, airstrikes, or even stray bullets just for a chance at a loaf of bread or a sack of flour. The desperation is unbearable. “We have no other choice,” said a father clutching his young daughter. “She hasn’t eaten properly in days.”
International relief efforts are hampered by blocked crossings and ongoing military tensions. Aid trucks often become symbols of survival, sparking chaos as starving residents swarm them. Humanitarian groups warn that Gaza’s population is now on the brink of a man-made famine.
Despite ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire, many in Gaza fear that unless immediate and large-scale food aid is allowed in, the suffering will only deepen. "A truce is meaningless if we're still dying of hunger," said a resident near al-Rashid Street.
