World on the Cusp of a New Nuclear Arms Race, Says SIPRI

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has issued a stark warning: the world may be entering a new nuclear arms race as global powers expand and modernize their arsenals.
In its latest annual report, SIPRI highlighted an alarming trend: nations including the United States, Russia, China, India, Pakistan, and North Korea are all increasing their focus on nuclear capabilities. These efforts include not only stockpiling weapons, but also improving delivery systems, missile defense, and strategic infrastructure.
“We are witnessing a dangerous moment where military and nuclear investments are rising while arms control agreements are breaking down,” said Dan Smith, SIPRI Director. “The risk of miscalculation or escalation has never been higher in the post-Cold War era.”
- Global nuclear warhead count: 12,512 (2024)
- Operationally deployed: 9,576
- U.S. & Russia hold 90% of global stockpile
