Ahmedabad, India — An Air India passenger jet crashed during landing in Ahmedabad early Thursday morning, killing 241 of the 242 people on board. Authorities confirmed that one person survived the deadly crash — a 9-year-old girl who was found among the wreckage and rushed to hospital in critical condition.
The Airbus A330 was en route from Dubai and reportedly experienced severe turbulence shortly before its descent. Eyewitnesses described seeing the aircraft tilt unnaturally before bursting into flames upon impact just outside Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
“There was a huge explosion followed by thick black smoke. Rescue teams were on the scene within minutes,” said Vikram Joshi, a local taxi driver who witnessed the crash.
Emergency services recovered charred remains of passengers, while forensic teams began the process of identification. Investigators are now examining the flight’s black box to determine the cause of the disaster.
The Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched an official investigation, while Air India has grounded several of its A330 aircraft pending inspections.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow and tweeted: “The nation mourns this tragic loss. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims.”
This is one of the deadliest aviation accidents in India’s history and has renewed concerns over aviation safety, particularly in high-traffic zones.
