Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched a deadly assault on a pre-school and surrounding civilian areas in the Kalogi locality of South Kordofan, killing at least 116 people, including 46 children, according to local authorities.

The attack, which took place on Thursday, has been described as one of the deadliest incidents in the region since the conflict intensified earlier this year. The executive director of Kalogi told Al Jazeera that dozens of children were attending class when the RSF struck the pre-school without warning.

Attack Targeted Civilians Offering Aid

Two military officials aligned with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) reported that after bombing the kindergarten, RSF fighters targeted groups of civilians who had rushed to the scene to help the injured.

The officials added that the RSF later hit Kalogi’s main hospital and a local government building, causing further casualties and severely hindering emergency response.

Death Toll Expected to Rise

Handling of casualties has been made difficult by damaged infrastructure and communication blackouts. Local officials fear numbers could climb as many remain missing and emergency teams struggle to reach affected areas.

Doctors say many wounded civilians are in critical condition due to a shortage of medical supplies and overcrowded treatment rooms.

UNICEF Strongly Condemns the Attack

“Killing children in their school is a horrific violation of children’s rights,” said Sheldon Yett, UNICEF representative for Sudan. “Children should never pay the price of conflict.”

He urged all warring factions to stop attacks on civilian sites and allow humanitarian agencies to reach those in urgent need.

Background: Conflict in South Kordofan Escalates

South Kordofan continues to emerge as a major flashpoint in Sudan’s civil conflict, with rights groups warning of increasing atrocities. Analysts say the RSF has escalated assaults on civilian areas, sparking mass displacement and further destabilizing the region.

International Reactions

Human rights organizations and global leaders have condemned the attack, calling for an urgent war crimes investigation. Pressure on Sudan’s warring sides is expected to increase as international concern deepens.
